Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. From its Galveston, Texas origin in 1865, the observance of June 19th as the African-American Emancipation Day has spread across the United States and beyond. “Juneteenth is a time to commemorate the emancipation of African-Americans in the United States and celebrate education and achievement,” said Rep. Gwen Moore. “Across the country Americans join together to reflect and rejoice in the great progress that has been made in our country and renew our commitment to equality for all people as we work to form a more perfect union. “In my district - which includes the city of Milwaukee – we have long celebrated Juneteenth Day and I am proud to say that the great state of Wisconsin recognizes this important holiday across the state as our official ‘Day of Jubilee’. “I encourage all Americans to learn more about this very unique holiday that recognizes an important moment in our country’s history.” To learn more about Juneteenth visit www.juneteenth.com. ### For More News Updates Follow Gwen Moore on Twitter @RepGwenMoore and Like Gwen Moore on Facebook
