Democrat organizes 'Charlie Hebdo' tribute at Obama speech

The deadly attack on Charlie Hebdo won't be far from the minds of some lawmakers attending the State of the Union Address.

Rep. Gwen Moore, D-Wis., has organized a tribute to the 12 people killed Jan. 7 at the Paris offices of the satirical magazine. During applause breaks in President Obama's remarks, lawmakers will be holding yellow pencils as a symbol of free speech and freedom of expression.

The gunmen in the Charlie Hebdo attack were said to be avenging Charlie Hebdo's publication of cartoons that mocked the prophet Mohammed.

Moore spokesman Eric Harris said so far 32 Democrats have agreed to participate, but it is still unknown if Republicans will join in the tribute.

"The congresswoman believes that this is a unique opportunity to join our global partners in showing our collective support and solidarity," Harris said.

Moore, first elected in 2004 to represent a district based in Milwaukee, will be in a wheelchair for the speech. She fell during the holidays and broke two feet and an arm.
