Congresswoman Gwen Moore Votes to Pass Legislation to Strengthen and Restore Women’s Reproductive Freedoms

Today, Congresswoman Gwen Moore supported House passage of the Women's Health Protection Act and the Ensuring Women's Right to Reproductive Freedom Act, which helps ensure women can make their own health care decisions without far-right politicians' interference. The Women's Health Protection Act would enshrine abortion rights into federal law and the Ensuring Women's Right to Reproductive Freedom Act would secure legal protections for women traveling out of state to receive an abortion, preventing Republicans from criminalizing women seeking out-of-state abortion.

“The GOP’s forced-birth policies are dangerous to the health of women and accompany pro-poverty policies such as cuts to Medicaid, SNAP, and WIC. Once the umbilical cord is cut, the GOP stops caring for the health and wellbeing of babies.

It is my duty to protect women in every state from the GOP’s extremist policies and a radically conservative Supreme Court majority, which is why I voted in favor of these two vital bills, reaffirming a woman’s right to control her own body.

All personal freedoms are at stake. That’s why House Democrats are using their power to help restore abortion rights and protect existing liberties for women. Because as we have seen, Republicans will not stop at repealing Roe. They are pursuing even more extreme policies, including trying to throw doctors in jail who perform abortion care and shoving women in jail for leaving their state for abortion care.

As the GOP-majority Supreme Court threatens to put other rights on the chopping block like birth control, miscarriage care, and marriage equality, House Democrats are fighting for women’s freedoms and all the individual liberties we hold dear as a country.”

Summary of the Women's Health Protection Act

  • H.R. 8296 is landmark legislation that ensures health care providers have a statutory right to provide abortion care and patients have a statutory right to receive that care, free from state bans and restrictions that are only intended to impede or block access.

  • The bill would restore abortion access nationwide and make it clear that all people have a right to an abortion without ideological, stigmatizing, and unnecessary restrictions that block care and undermine a woman’s ability to make her own health care decisions.

Summary of the Ensuring Women's Right to Reproductive Freedom Act

  • This legislation stops the criminalization, fining, or suing of women who exercise their constitutional right to travel across state lines to obtain an abortion.
