Congresswoman Gwen Moore Leads Letter Urging Use of Online Tool to Increase Awareness of Tax Credit Programs Congresswoman Moore led 57 of her colleagues in calling on the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and Treasury Department to implement an outreach program to inform users of the electronic non-filer portal established for making the Economic Impact Payments of their potential eligibility for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Child Tax Credit (CTC). In response, she released the following statement: “The EITC and CTC are powerful resources that can uplift families from poverty, and now more than ever, these credits can provide meaningful support for low and middle- income Americans – annually. The IRS estimates that the average amount of EITC received nationwide was about $2,461 and the Tax Policy Center estimates that 90 percent of families with children will receive an average CTC of $2,380 in 2020. “Too many Americans miss out on these benefits but using the existing non-filer tool used to disburse the EIP presents an opportunity for the IRS and Treasury to reach the same Americans who could be eligible for the EITC and CTC. “As we near the tax filing season and millions are struggling during this pandemic, it’s critical that we use every tool available to reach Americans and inform them of the critical benefits they might be eligible for! Imagine what a difference this outreach could make in the lives of millions of Americans.” Read the full text of the letter here. |
