By Neil Heinen Just in time for International Women’s Day, President Obama Thursday signed into law the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act. First of all, the Act itself is an unfortunately essential protection and support for victims of domestic violence. But this reauthorization also improves the act by including new protection for Native American women, immigrant victims and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender victims. Thus, as Wisconsin Coalition Against Domestic Violence executive director Patti Seger points out, the law now “reaches all victims.” We also need to point out that while Wisconsin Congresswomen Gwen Moore and Senator Tammy Baldwin were instrumental in moving the improved bill forward, the bill was passed in both Houses with bipartisan support. That’s not to be overlooked in these times, though it’s hard to think of an issue that deserves it more. To view this article online, please click here.
