White House releases video before Obama's Milwaukee visit

by Bill Glauber

Before President Barack Obama's visit to Milwaukee Thursday, the White House released a video celebrating the city's win in the Healthy Communities Challenge.

The video shows White House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough relaying news of the win during a phone call to top public officials, including Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett, Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele and U.S. Rep. Gwen Moore (D-Milwaukee).

The challenge was a contest among 20 cities to enroll people in health plans sold on the marketplace established by Obama's signature legislative achievement, the Affordable Care Act.

According to the White House, about 38,000 people in the Milwaukee area were newly enrolled in a health plan on the federal marketplace. In all, about 89,000 people in the Milwaukee area selected a 2016 marketplace plan, the White House said.

The video closes with "nine Wisconsinites of the White House" celebrating the victory on the White House lawn. A few of the staffers wore cheese heads.

On Thursday, Obama will deliver remarks at the United Community Center on S. 9th St. in Milwaukee.
