Congresswoman Gwen Moore Votes No on Government Funding Bill that Ignores Republican Health Care Crisis “I understand this shutdown has imposed hardships on federal workers and the programs our communities need. These hardships have only worsened because of the Trump administration’s deliberate policy decisions, including suing to deprive 42 million Americans of food. After allowing Affordable Care Act (ACA) premiums to spike, my constituents are being forced to pay thousands more for health insurance come January 1st. And for others, higher premiums will force them to forgo health insurance altogether. This isn’t a theoretical threat for more than 300,000 Wisconsinites, including small business owners, who are covered by the ACA. Many of my constituents have shared with my office how important this coverage is to them. By gutting Medicaid and ignoring ACA premium hikes, Republicans created this health care crisis. And these same Republicans continue to defend their cruel agenda. While I appreciate and respect the eight Democratic Senators who negotiated this deal, I have little confidence in the promise of a future vote on a still unknown proposal to extend ACA premium subsidies. Rather than working to address real costs of living concerns facing Americans, Republicans instead slipped in a provision that allows certain GOP Senators to sue for millions, using taxpayer funds to enrich themselves through lawsuits related to January 6th investigations. This is a grift. We could have ended this Republican shutdown and protected Congress’s power of the purse and helped families facing massive increases in health care premium costs. This bill falls short of these critical needs, which is why I could not support it.”
