Congresswoman Gwen Moore Statement Following Helsinki Hearing on the Russia-Ukraine Crisis Following the U.S. Helsinki Commission’s hearing on Russia’s Dangerous Military Buildup on Ukraine’s Border. Congresswoman Moore, a Helsinki Commissioner, released the following statement: “I am seriously concerned about Russia’s aggressive actions against Ukraine, which includes Russia deploying thousands of troops and equipment to Ukraine’s border. I want to see a diplomatic resolution and agree with our Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, that ‘diplomacy is the only responsible way to resolve this crisis.’ I am pleased that Secretary Blinken and the Biden administration are aggressively pursuing diplomacy to help resolve this crisis, including talking directly with Russians and sending diplomats to speak with important regional allies to build international consensus. As a Helsinki Commissioner, I appreciated the opportunity to hear experts today speak about the ongoing situation in Ukraine, including options for averting a disastrous military invasion or dangerous escalation. During today’s hearing, I raised the question of strategy to our witnesses, asking how our tactics would change if, despite the ongoing diplomatic efforts, military escalation was to occur. I also asked about how we can strengthen our NATO alliance considering the political and economic factors that our European allies are considering right now without creating further tensions in the region. As events on the ground are quickly changing, I continue to seek a peaceful solution and to support the hard work being done by our diplomats every day to achieve that outcome.” |
