Congresswoman Gwen Moore Announces $42 Million to Address Flooding in Under-Resourced Communities in Milwaukee

Today, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced a $42 million Water Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act (WIFIA) loan to Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD), which will provide funding to carry out critical local projects to reduce flooding in vulnerable parts of our city. Congresswoman Moore released the following statement:

“Protecting the quality of our water and the health of all communities in Milwaukee is a priority for me. I have long supported efforts to help protect our communities from flooding, a persistent challenge that can have devastating impacts, especially in underserved neighborhoods.

That is why I was pleased to support Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District’s (MMSD) comprehensive application to EPA to use WIFIA funding to fund several projects to help address pressing challenges in our city.  I am thrilled that MMSD will receive a $42 million loan for the first set of projects, that will use vacant, industrial land to help better deal with stormwater and prevent flooding while providing more green space in our community, among other benefits.

The EPA estimates that these projects will create 130 jobs which will create new opportunities for Milwaukee residents and support economic growth. This funding will benefit Milwaukee for years to come and I am looking forward to building upon these investments,” said Congresswoman Moore.

“Congresswoman Moore showed true leadership on this opportunity to help people in Milwaukee’s 30th Street Corridor that have lived through decades of flooding problems,” said MMSD Executive Director Kevin Shafer. “Her support on this loan will benefit the entire region as we move forward with cleaning up toxic sediments that have accumulated in our rivers for more than 100 years.”
