Congresswoman Gwen Moore Votes for Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act “Last week, our country recognized the somber anniversary of the January 6th attempted coup. Since that shameful day, attacks on our democracy have only continued. Republicans in state legislatures across the country have used the Big Lie that the 2020 election was stolen to install partisan election officials, gerrymander state maps, and create barriers to the ballot box, including here in Wisconsin. We cannot afford to move backwards. Leaders like my late friend, John Lewis were always willing to get in the way for justice and civil rights. Now, it’s on us to carry the baton for our democracy. Reforms in the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act such as expanding automatic voter registration, making Election Day a national holiday, restoring the ability of the federal government to use the Voting Rights Act to stop voter suppression aimed at minority communities, and ending partisan election interference are imperative and directly respond to the attacks on our democracy today. Many of these provisions had already passed this House in this Congress only to face a Senate filibuster. But House Democrats are not giving up. The stakes are too high for our democracy and our communities. That’s why I voted for this critical legislation, to protect the voices of the American people by safeguarding the right to vote and guaranteeing safe and fair elections nationwide. And I continue to urge my Senate colleagues to use this opportunity to do the same.” |
