Congresswoman Gwen Moore Statement on Preventing a Federal Government Default

With the federal government potentially days from an unprecedented default, today, Congresswoman Moore supported legislation to raise the debt ceiling to ensure America can pay its bills. In response, she released the following statement:

“During the Trump administration, Democrats never thought to weaponize the debt ceiling. In fact, Democrats supported suspending the debt ceiling three times, even as Republicans added $2 trillion to the debt with their tax giveaway to the wealthy and big corporations! And guess what, Republicans were glad to join us in raising the debt ceiling when their guy was in office and piling up IOUs.

Sadly, Republicans now see the debt ceiling as an opportunity to jeopardize our economic recovery by threatening to force the US to default on our financial obligations.

I am tired of Republicans threatening to wreak havoc on our country and weaponizing the debt ceiling for partisan hostage taking. There’s too much at stake for their games. When we go into default, America can’t pay its bills, which jeopardizes veteran’s hard-earned benefits, seniors being able to receive their Social Security checks on time, families receiving vital Child Tax Credit payments, and causes higher interest rates on consumer products such as home and car loans, and much more.

To add to the catastrophe, 6 million jobs could be lost, according to Moody’s Analytics. Thankfully, Democrats are working to prevent what experts have warned, and Republicans have stated in the past, would be a catastrophic default.

The full faith and credit of the United States should never be put in jeopardy. But the work is not done. In a few weeks, the Congress will have to again act to address the debt ceiling. Democrats will always be a champion for the people, and work in the best interest of the country. We hope our colleagues on the other side of the aisle will join us.”
