Congresswoman Gwen Moore Leads Effort in Calling for a Funding Increase for McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Grant Programs

Congresswoman Moore and Congressman John Katko (R-NY) led 157 of their colleagues in a bipartisan letter to the Appropriations Committee calling for $3.5 billion in funding in FY 22 for the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s((HUD) ) McKinney- Vento Homeless Assistance Grants (HAG) program.

“There is no doubt that the misery index increased during the pandemic for millions of Americans. Like other cities around the country, too many Milwaukee residents either faced evictions or only kept their heads above water because of eviction moratoriums.

And prior to the pandemic, there were already more than half a million Americans experiencing homelessness in our country.McKinney-Vento homeless assistance programs can lift people out of homelessness and into stable housing, which is even more vital now, and why I am calling for boosted funds for these programs and as included by President Biden in his FY 2022 budget.

It’s on us to ensure that people who have fallen behind don’t become left behind.”

HAG Continuum of Care (CoC) and Emergency Solutions Grants (ESG) programs are utilized by state and local governments and non-profit organizations to prevent homelessness and support those experiencing homelessness. Local recipients of this funding include Center for Veterans Issues, Ltd and Community Advocates, Inc.
