Wisconsin delegation split on party line votes on COVID-19 stimulus package

WISN - The U.S. House of Representatives will vote Wednesday to send President Joe Biden his $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief plan with likely no Republican support.

"It's all about governing," Rep. Gwen Moore (D-Wis.) said. "When you’re the party in charge, you’re supposed to govern."

"This is a great package," she added. "It is almost close to being a new deal for people who are behind. This is not a stimulus package. This is a rescue package."

The package includes a new round of direct payments -- $1,400 for individuals and children and $2,800 for married couples.

The payments are capped at $80,000 for individuals and $160,000 for couples.

"There’s something in this for everybody -- I understand that," Rep. Bryan Steil (R-Wis.) said. "But this is a job where we need to make tough decisions on behalf of the American people. We need to protect people's health, and we can do that without leveraging the fiscal stability of the country."

The plan also extends unemployment benefits and expands the child tax credit.

It also sets aside billions of dollars for local governments.

Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley said the county is expected to receive $183 million.

"When COVID-19 hit us, it basically lit our house on fire," Crowley said. "So you think about the federal relief -- this is a bill that is going to help us put out that fire."
