Congresswoman Gwen Moore Votes No on National Defense Authorization Act

Today, Congresswoman Moore voted no on the William M. (Mac) Thornberry National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2021. In response, she released the following statement:

“While I support provisions in the NDAA to provide a pay raise to meet the needs of our men and women in uniform and to remove confederate flags and change the name of military bases who are named after Confederate leaders and efforts to diversify our military, other meaningful changes were blocked including to prevent a needless war with Iran. I could not support this bill which continues the status quo when it comes to the Pentagon budget, a Department which still cannot pass an audit. 

During floor debate on this amendment, I was pleased to vote for Rep. Pocan’s amendment that would cut 10% from the Defense Budget, with exemptions for military personnel and health accounts. We can and must pass a NDAA that ensures our country meets its national security needs and supports our service members and their families. This cannot be achieved without a serious examination of the nearly quarter trillion dollars of spending in this bill, especially as poverty, housing insecurity, and unemployment continue to soar.”
