Rep. Gwen Moore Applauds Federal Approval of Lead Abatement Program to Protect the Health and Safety of Wisconsin Children and Expectant Mothers The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) approved a lead abatement initiative program for pregnant women and low-income children enrolled in BadgerCare Plus and Medicaid. Governor Evers’ budget included $14.2 million for lead reduction efforts and testing. Congresswoman Moore released the following statement: “Lead exposure is a pervasive public health crisis throughout Wisconsin that affected Milwaukee communities particularly hard. The consequences of lead exposure stay with children well beyond their childhood and cause severe damage to children’s growing brain’s and bodies. I am pleased that we have a Governor actively working to address this threat to our community and seeking to utilize every tool to help prevent and mitigate the impact lead poisoning has on our communities, especially for low-income mothers and children, who are particularly vulnerable. We need to invest in the future of every child, to ensure that every child has the opportunity to become healthy and thriving adults. The approval of this proposal gets us closer to ending lead poisoning in Wisconsin. I applaud the work of the Governor and his team and will continue to work with partners at the federal , state, and local levels to combat lead poisoning.” ### |
