Congresswoman Gwen Moore Statement on the Ways and Means Committee Lawsuit To Release Trump’s Tax Returns

“Today, the House Ways and Means Committee filed a complaint in federal court to obtain six years of President Trump’s tax returns. Since assuming office, President Trump has been eroding our democratic institutions by placing himself and his administration above the law. The refusal of the President, Treasury Department and Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to release President Trump’s tax returns to the Committee is yet another affront to democracy.

Congress has the right and obligation to perform oversight including the right to request the President’s tax returns. The President and his administration are choosing to ignore valid congressional oversight requests related to the IRS’s administration of tax laws and policies relating to Presidential tax returns and tax law compliance by President Trump. Let me be clear, by failing to comply, the President is thwarting congress’s exercise of its legislative responsibilities.

Now, the judiciary must act swiftly to restore the balance of power by enabling Congress to fulfill its essential role of overseeing the Executive Branch,” said Congresswoman Moore.
