For Immediate Release Congresswoman Gwen Moore (WI-04) Celebrates Denim Day
Milwaukee, WI – Tomorrow, Milwaukee marks its eighth annual Denim Day, an international awareness day focused on raising awareness of sexual assault and victim blaming. This year, Denim Day Milwaukee continues to expand with many awareness events and demonstrations of support for survivors. Congresswoman Gwen Moore (WI-04) and Denim Day Milwaukee partnered with communities of color citywide to spread awareness. Congresswoman Moore issued the following statement: “Communities of color experience sexual violence at a disproportionately high rate. It is on us as citizens to promote positive change for our communities. We can help with healing and prevention of these deep wounds by pledging to take concrete action to end sexual assault,” said Congresswoman Moore. Though the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) is still under attack, the House of Representatives, with its historic number of women, passed legislation (H.R. 1585) on April 4th reauthorizing VAWA. “Our bill includes a provision, which if passed, would bar those convicted of abusing, assaulting, stalking or those with certain restraining orders from buying or owning firearms. We must ensure that the Senate does not undermine this provision to prevent convicted domestic abusers from having a gun. This bill also builds upon the ground-breaking amendments made 5 years ago during the last reauthorization of VAWA which I championed, and which added protections for LGBTQ women, Native Americans, and immigrant women.” Denim Day Co-Chair Congresswoman Moore will join Mayor Tom Barrett and other members of the Denim Day Milwaukee committee for a press conference in the Prosperity meeting room of the Potawatomi Hotel & Casino beginning promptly at 10:00 AM CST.
