Congresswoman Gwen Moore Statement On Passage Of Violence Against Women Act
“This is a great day and I’m tremendously proud of the passage of this important bill to protect women and all those impacted by domestic and sexual violence. I stand shoulder to shoulder with my colleagues who have supported this measure. We are acting on the clear data that shows the far-reaching effects of violence,” said Congresswoman Moore. “Not only are victims at a higher risk of developing addictions to a host of substances as a way of coping with the trauma and stress of being victimized, but over 50 percent of survivor’s experience depression and other long-term negative physical and emotional health outcomes like heart disease and cancer. Violence is an epidemic in America. It rears its ugly head in many forms, and unfortunately, women and other defenseless communities bear the brunt of this trauma. I hope my colleagues in the Senate hear our call to action and follow suit.”
