Contact: Congresswoman Gwen Moore Statement On Gender Wage Gap In America Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Gwen Moore (WI-4) is releasing the following statement to raise awareness for Equal Pay Day and to highlight the unfair wage gap between men and women across the country: “It’s time to close the pay gap that puts women at an unfair distance behind men. Paying women 80 cents for every dollar a man is paid for similar work makes zero sense. And, this uncomfortable truth needs to be addressed. The disparity in pay has an even greater impact on women of color. This is a stark and painful reality in Milwaukee,” Congresswoman Moore said. This year alone, advocates estimate that across the country women who work full-time will lose more than $900 billion to this unjust wage gap, leaving working women without resources they need to pay for basic needs like food, housing, utilities, child care and tuition. It’s simply unfair and unAmerican. That’s why I co-sponsored the Paycheck Fairness Act, voted for its recent passage in the House, and will continue to work toward raising awareness of this important issue that puts women steps behind men. I hope you join me in calling attention to this issue on Equal Pay Day,” said Congresswoman Moore. The National Partnership for Women & Families released new data from the U.S. Census Bureau that shows women, especially women of color, are still lagging behind men when it comes to pay. The data can be found by visiting: www.nationalpartnership.org. Equal Pay day is Tuesday April 2, 2019.
