Congresswoman Gwen Moore Statement On The President’s Budget

Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Gwen Moore (WI-4) has issued the following statement on the President’s budget for Fiscal Year 2020:

“This budget amounts to empty promises. And this new attempt to undermine Medicare and repeal the Affordable Care Act is taking another swing at seniors and other vulnerable Americans who depend on our long-standing social safety nets.

I am steadfast against work requirements for welfare recipients. How can the mandatory work requirements not demand mandatory childcare and other work supports such as transportation, education and training? Work requirements have been an abysmal failure in other states. To take this failed strategy aimed at attacking poor people makes no sense. And, it’s wrong. American taxpayers deserve better than this blatant attempt to gut our system of checks and balance that looks out for all Americans; not just those who can afford gold plated toilets and Ostrich jackets. This Republican double speak followed by a bait and switch maneuver amounts to one uncomfortable truth we’ve become all too accustomed to from this Administration; empty promises and an incessant attempt to disembowel our democracy to please the rich.

This budget isn’t just selfish; it’s inhumane. To present a budget requesting nearly $9 billion for a border wall that Congress previously rejected, amounts to a major disconnect with reality. I’m going to work to ensure that most of this budget does not become law, and instead work for a better alternative. Congress can and will do better.”
