Milwaukee, WI - In response to the announcement that the Social Security Administration's Office of the Inspector General will, as requested, be opening an investigation into the circumstances and procedures leading up to the planned closure of the Mitchell St. SSA Field Office on Milwaukee’s Southside, Congresswoman Gwen Moore (WI-04) and U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin, released the following statement:
“Violating congressionally mandated closure and consolidation policies at the expense of an already underserved community is inexcusable,” said Congresswoman Moore. “I am encouraged that the Inspector General will be investigating how the decision was made to close the Mitchell St. Field Office and its impact on my constituents. As the investigation proceeds, it is imperative that my Southside constituents have uninterrupted access to the SSA services to which they are entitled.”
“I’m pleased that the Inspector General has agreed to launch a review of the Social Security Administration’s decision to shut down the Mitchell Street office,” said Senator Baldwin. “Thousands of Milwaukee residents visit this office each month and they should have in-person services in their neighborhood. I have been working with Congresswoman Moore, Mayor Barrett, Alderman Jose Perez and other Milwaukee elected officials to urge the SSA to work with us on a solution, and I am frustrated that they have ignored the community’s concerns about this office closure.”
