U.S. Rep. Gwen Moore is urging officials with two federal agencies to open investigations of Milwaukee's troubled program aimed at preventing lead poisoning in children.

Moore sent the letters, dated Tuesday, to the acting director of the Centers for Disease Control and the field office director of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

"I am concerned about my constituents, especially the children who may not have received appropriate care," the Milwaukee Democrat wrote in both letters. "I urge you to investigate the administration of this program and ensure it is in compliance with the guidelines for lead poisoning as established by the federal Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program.”

Jennifer Gonda, head of Milwaukee Water Works, said Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett's administration shared Moore's concerns. Gonda pledged to work with Moore to address the lead-related issues.

"Her request is reasonable," Gonda said.

Earlier this month, city Health Commissioner Bevan Baker stepped down amid concerns that his agency had failed to provide notification and follow-up services to thousands of children who had tested positive for lead.
