Gwen Moore Celebrates Chinese New Year

As Chinese-American families around the country celebrate the Chinese New Year, I urge my constituents and all Americans to learn about the many and varied contributions of Chinese Americans to the development of our nation.

The Chinese New Year, also called the Spring Festival, is a 15-day celebration beginning on the first day of the Chinese Lunar calendar. Families often reunite to eat and celebrate the beginning of a new year. The feasting is symbolic and one of the most important parts of the celebration. “Today, I am so happy to recognize the start of the Chinese New Year,” said Rep. Moore. “Chinese immigrants have brought fashion, food and fireworks to American culture. As Chinese-American families around the country celebrate the Chinese New Year, I urge my constituents and all Americans to learn about the many and varied contributions of Chinese Americans to the development of our nation.” Each New Year is marked by one of the 12 zodiacal animals. 2013 marks the year of the Snake. Those born during Snake years are said to be self-reliant and able to shed adversity just like a snake sheds its skin. Famous Americans born in Snake years include Oprah Winfrey, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Bob Dylan. Chinese New Year is often celebrated in Chinatowns across the United States. The Chinese New Year celebrations in Milwaukee happened on February 1st and 2nd.
