by Michele Fiore MILWAUKEE - The Milwaukee County District Attorney's office is considering charges against the teacher's aide seen on camera allegedly slamming a student to the floor. In the meantime, video showing that fight at Bay View High School has gone viral. Facebook video of the incident has already been shared thousands of times and had 384,000 views. Parents, students and educators TODAY'S TMJ4 met with Thursday outside of the school had mixed feelings on the issue. When the fight went down, students picked up their cell phones. A student who was in the classroom when it happened told TODAY'S TMJ4 the boy was "ribbing" another student when the teacher's aide asked him to stop. The boy is a freshman and he stayed home from school Thursday, but the news has his classmates talking. When asked, what do you think should happen to the teacher's aide, a student defended him. "I think he should keep his job because honestly a lot of kids need it, especially these days in the city of Milwaukee," said Japarish Young. Comments posted on Facebook show people have strong opinions on both sides. Opinions like these, "I would've jumped in. Teachers bring their hood attitude to work." "These kids be going crazy. Why would he kick a teacher LM_ _O. Lord knows if I was a teacher, a student kicks me, I'm gonna forget I was human." Congresswoman Gwen Moore (D - 4th District) is also reacting to the video saying, "Luckily, the student only sustained minor injuries. But that doesn't change the severity or magnitude of this incident." Parents we met tell us the school's had issues with students being disrespectful in the classrooms, and say fights have broken out between students. In an attempt to calm a sometimes tense teaching environment, MPS brought in an educator under the "YES for Schools" program." Every year for the last three years, they've been working with the freshmen class on anger management, stress, and empowerment. Asked, if teacher's are seeing a difference with the older kids, the answer was yes. "100 percent. So we have tons of data. I can't say off the top of my head, but we have lots of data that shows that bullying goes down . Growth mindset goes up. As anything else in life, it takes practice and it takes perseverance," said Ambrose W.B., an educator. MPS removed the teacher's aide from the classroom immediately, and school officials are considering whether to take disciplinary action against him. To read this article online, please click here.
