Remembering Vel Phillips

Fighting for what is good and what is right was the joy of Vel’s life. She spread that joy into my life and the lives of so many members of our community. It is with a heavy heart, but extreme pride, that I deliver the eulogy at her memorial services this weekend.

Protecting Essential Services at Ascension

I am relieved that Ascension responded to the public's outcry by putting their harmful plan to cut essential services at St. Joseph's Hospital on hold. Reducing services to this vital safety-net hospital would threaten the well-being of my constituents by forcing them to travel to distant hospitals that are already struggling to meet existing demand.

Defending Women’s Health Care

This month, I was honored to join Planned Parenthood’s largest lobby day in history, fighting efforts by the Trump-Pence administration to decimate women’s health care and demanding our lawmakers protect our health and our rights.

Protecting Small & Minority Owned Businesses

In April, my amendment to ensure prompt payment to contractors working in our nation's airports passed the House as part of the FAA Reauthorization Act. The issue of delayed payments is one of many barriers that deny qualified minority and women-owned businesses fair opportunity. It is essential we protect these businesses from discrimination and ensure their equal treatment.

Protesting Cuts to Food Aid

Last week, I took to the House floor to protest massive cuts to food aid programs in the GOP’s Farm Bill. Hunger sees no gender, race, religion, or political affiliation. These cuts do nothing more than punish disadvantaged families and advance the GOP’s war on the poor.
