Dear Friends,

This weekend marks the beginning of Pesach(commonly referred to as Passover), a week-long observance that marks the escape of the Israelites from the chains of slavery in Egypt. As Jewish people in Milwaukee prepare for this time of remembrance, I’d like to offer my thoughts on the lessons we can learn from this particularly moving celebration.

On the first two nights of this holiday, individuals retell the story of the Israelites’ enslavement in Egypt and their ultimate liberation. Passover is not only a holiday that asks us to reflect on overcoming persecution, but it also gives us a chance to decide how we can tackle the critical issues facing the most vulnerable among us.

As someone who dedicated her career to helping the people who most desperately need it, I find this holiday to be moving and a reminder of all the work that is left to be done in our great country. Let us not forget there are still lawmakers nationwide attempting to restrict our rights, making it harder to start a new and full life in our country, causing us to live in fear of the consequences of watered-down gun laws, and taking away our right to choose our own reproductive future.

Passover was forged in the flames of persecution. This Pesach, as Milwaukee’s Jewish community sits down with their families and lights the candles that begin the Passover Seder, I encourage all of us to keep the flame of justice bright to bring attention to those who continue the fight for justice and equality.

From my family to yours, I’d like to wish you all a bountiful and reflective Seder and Chag Sameach.

Love,
Gwen
